11 Lakes Traveling Exhibit

Two other designers and I were tasked with designing an exhibit to introduce a traveling exhibit to promote the brand-new Finger Lakes Museum.

The client provided us with information for two out of the four panels, dimensions for the panels, a brand identity to follow, and loose design elements they wanted to be included in the final execution. For the last two panels, the client asked us to come up with interactive activities to encourage engagement with the installation. Additionally, they asked us to make the design flow from panel to panel as one cohesive image. The final three-dimensional design would be made into a free-standing parallelogram, so every panel also needed to stand on its own.

Growing up in Oregon and then going to school in the Finger Lakes region gave me a unique perspective to base my interactive panel. What I observed about the people who have lived in or visited the area is that what makes the area special is the memories that people have made and continue to make in the region. For my interactive panel, I wanted to allow viewers to share fond memories in the area with others. I decided the best way to do so was to create a simple panel with branded postcards so that people could reflect on and share their fondest memories. All you do is take a postcard, write down your story, and attach it to the board. I also thought this would be a great marketing opportunity for the museum. People also have the option to take a postcard home which could create a word-of-mouth marketing opportunity, and ultimately drive traffic to the museum.

My absolute favorite part about the design process was working with two other very talented designers Sydnie Brown and Sarah Tower. The final design execution was a completely collaborative process and it showed me how much fun it is to collaborate with other designers. Additionally, Sydnie came up with the idea and initial design for the "Share Your Journey" interactive game and Sarah conceptualized and designed the "Which is Your Favorite Finger Lake" game.
